COMA
(Note: this story is supposed to be like a short video game. And the main character will be judged by how the “player” reacts to things. I hope you enjoy it.  )
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but I think we’re losing him.” “No. No that’s not possible. Honey please wake up.”

Jack Simmons, a police officer working for NYPD, and his wife Rebecca Simmons were at home laying in bed. The two of them were awoken by the sound of their alarm clock going off. Jack rolled to his right and shut the alarm clock off. He rolled back over and sat up. He stretched, then rubbed his eyes. Rebecca opened her eyes and saw the time. “Four thirty? Honey don’t you think that’s a bit early?”
Jack turned and dangled his legs over the edge of the bed. “It is but the sheriff said he had an important announcement today.” he said rubbing his eyes. He was about to get up when he felt a hand grab his arm. He looked at his wife. “You could stay for a little, debriefing right?” he smiled and got back into bed. He giggled as he covered their bodies with the blanket on the bed.

Thirty minutes later Jack got up. He looked at the clock. “I need to get ready.” he left the room to take a shower. He got his clothes and got in the bathroom. Rebecca just laid in bed and heard the shower water run. She then got out of bed and walked to the kitchen. She got out pancake mix and cooked herself some pancakes. “I’ll make two for him.” she got his pancakes cooked first. She got the batter and mixed it. She poured the tasty liquid in the pan and heard it cook.
She grabbed a spatula and jammed it into the bottom of the pancake. She heard the water stop. She waited until the other side was finished cooking. She waited a minute and took it off. She put it into a plate and put it next to her. She saw Jack rush out into the kitchen. He was dressed in blue pants, blue shirt with a badge that reads his name, blue officer’s cap, black shoes, and a brown belt with a Beretta M9 in a holster, handcuffs in another holster, a radio, taser, and a nightstick.
“I’m making you pancakes for breakfast.” he walked over to her and kissed her on the lips. “Sorry but no time.” He walked over to the door and grabbed his keys. He then looked back at her. “Sheriff Drake will have my ass if I’m late.” He opened the door and was about to walk out. “Okay, bye.” She said. He left without replying.
Jack closed the door and locked it. He walked to his patrol car and opened it. He got in and turned it on. He backed out of the driveway and made his way to the station.
Rebecca finished her pancakes and sat at the table. “Oh the syrup.” She got back up and walked to the refrigerator. She got a bottle of syrup and closed the fridge. She walked back over to the table and sat down. She hovered the bottle over her breakfast and poured the syrup. She lifted the bottle and set it down on the table. She got her knife and fork and started to cut her pancakes.
Jack stopped at a red light and turned the radio on. He then heard a Mustang zip right past him, running a red light. He looked up in a fright. “Oh hell no.” he turned his sirens on and went into a chase.
Rebecca had just finished eating. She got her plate and put it in the dishwasher. She put the syrup back in the fridge. She too got in the shower and washed off. She finished and got out. She dried herself and got dressed.
“I have a yellow Mustang. Suspect may be intoxicated. Going north of Bayard Street. Request back up.” Jack put the radio back and continued to chase the suspect. The suspect turned left onto a one way street going the wrong way. He dodged and weaved other cars. Jack dodged each car as if it was no problem.
Jack caught up with the suspect. He was almost tailgating him. He then heard a loud bang. Jack realized he blew a tire. “God dammit.” He pulled out his gun and aimed it at the suspect’s tires. He fired once missing. He fired once more and shot out the back left tire. He took another shot and shot out the front left tire. The Mustang veered left and came to a sudden stop when it crashed into a building. Jack’s eyes widened as he saw he was headed for the same building.
Rebecca was sweeping the kitchen floor when she started to feel lonely. “Maybe I’ll call him to just talk.”
Jack’s phone rang. He looked at it and then out his windshield. He realized that he had just crashed. He got out of his car and looked around. Crowds of people were flocked around him. “Please vacate the area.” He demanded. He drew his weapon and aimed it at the Mustang. “Sir or ma’am, please step out of the vehicle.” He approached the car and looked in the driver’s side.
He lowered his weapon when he saw that the suspect fled the car. “Dammit. Just… shit.” He was about to talk into his radio when he heard a gunshot. He saw a flash come from the tall ten story building in front of him. He didn’t feel a bullet hit him. Instead, he noticed a civilian was shot. He rushed towards the injured person and realized it was a little boy. He looked at him and knew he would be okay. The bullet entered the boy’s stomach, but for him to live, he needed medical attention fast. “Call an ambulance.”
Jack looked back at the building and saw the suspect run past the windows on the second floor. Jack rushed inside and knocked a couple of people over. He ran upstairs and was nearing the suspect. When Jack was in the suspects view, he took a couple of shots at him. The bullets rushed past Jack and hit the floor. Jack continued his pursuit and got a better look at the suspect. He was about 5’ 7’’, Latino male, black hair, and carried a Walther PPK.
Jack got closer and closer to the man with each floor. He was finally able to aim his pistol at him, but the man grabbed a female suspect. “Drop your gun or she dies.” He yelled. The man pointed his gun at the female’s head. Jack still had his gun aimed at him. “DO IT!” he lowered his gun and put it on the bottom of her jaw. “Please don’t kill me.” She cried. The man acted as if she didn’t speak.
Jack dropped his gun as it landed with a thud. “Good.” He shoved the woman aside and shot at Jack. He hit him in the heart. Jack was stunned and in pain. The only thing he could do was get on his knees and put his hand over the wound. He quickly got his pistol and aimed at the suspect. But before he could shoot him, he ran off. He fell on his face and blacked out.

Jack woke up and saw the ceiling move. It was a checkered ceiling with ceiling lights. He also heard the sound of squeaky wheels and a heartbeat monitor. It didn’t take long before he realized he was in a hospital. He looked to his right and saw his wife walking with him. “Oh honey, I’m so glad you’re alive.” He tired to speak but all that came out was slurred words.
He saw he was wheeled into a room and was placed on a bed. He read the room number. “Rebecca.” She looked at him. “Don’t forget, room 558.” She smiled and nodded. He saw the doctors push her out and close the curtains behind her. His vision faded once more.

He slowly opened his eyes to find a blurry room. He lifted his arms to rub his eyes. He looked around once more. It was dark and quiet. He heard the monitor was turned off. “That’s strange.” He looked at his watch and realized it stopped. “I guess there was a power outage and it happened at, midnight.” He turned to his right and opened the curtain. “Excuse me, sir. Can you…” he was stopped to find a dead body. It looked as if it was in a decomposing state.
Jack nearly fell off his bed. He looked at the door and the door number no longer said 558, but it said 666. He put his hands on his head. “What the hell is going on?” he saw a note next to the door. And below it was an M9 with two magazines. He got up out of bed and walked towards the note. He read it. ‘THIS GUN WILL KEEP YOU SAFE. ESCAPE.’
He stood in one position. “Keep me safe? Safe from what?” he picked the gun up and put one magazine in. He took the other magazine and was about to put it in his pocket. He realized he was no longer in the hospital robe. Instead, he was in his officer’s uniform. He shook his head and put the extra magazine in his pocket. “What the hell is going on? Am I dreaming?” he turned the doorknob and opened the door.
To his surprise, the hallway that was there was now gone. It was the same room he was in. The same dilapidated walls, rusty equipment’s, and dead patients. He then saw something that caught his eye. He looked at it before realizing it was a lever. He walked towards the lever. He also noticed it was above one of the dead patients.
Jack was to the side of the patient and reached for the lever. The patient almost came back to life. He grabbed Jack’s arm. “Let go of me.” He shook his arm rapidly. He then hit the patient’s arm with his gun. Jack backed up in shock. The patient got up and started to walk towards Jack. He aimed his gun at the patient. “Shoot him. He’s not a person.” His conscious said. He fired two shots, killing the creature.
He walked over the creature and towards the lever. He pulled it down and heard what sounded like concrete moving. He saw a part of the wall move up. It revealed a doorway to another room.
He entered the room and realized it was a room full of patients. Five on each side. The room was large and wide. There was only one light on the ceiling. It was in the middle of the room shining on an old wooden chair. He looked both directions and found no threat. He slowly approached the chair. He then looked to his sides and realized the patients were gone.
He aimed his gun in front of him and moved around. “Nothing is making sense.” He looked behind him to find someone running towards him. He fired twice and his vision went white. He fell to his knees, dropped his gun, and put his hands on his chest.
“Clear!” the doctor said. He put defibrillators on Jack’s chest and pumped electricity through his body.
Jack got back up. “What just happened?” he picked his gun back up. He looked around and noticed the room was different. He looked around to try to find the person he shot. But not even he was there. “What did that note mean by escape? Escape this hospital? If so, I need to get moving.” He started to walk when he stopped again.  The room changed once more. It was now a hallway. “What?”
He looked behind him to find a wall. He decided to walk down the hallway. With each step, he felt as if the lighting got dimmer and dimmer. He saw a note in the middle of the hallway. ‘BEFORE LEAVING, CHECK THE ROOMS. BUT BE CAREFUL. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN HERE.’ Jack put the note down. “You’re telling me.”
He looked up and saw an exit sign. He decided to turn around and start at the first door. He saw that the wall was closing in on him. “Oh shit.” He ran forwards and tried to ignore the fact that he was going to be squished. He noticed that he wasn’t getting any closer to the exit. He looked behind him to find the hallway back to normal. He walked back to the very first door.
He looked at the door and instead of it reading numbers, it had a single letter. “C” he looked at it with curiosity. He then entered the room. It was a bright white room. On the wall was wording. All it read was, ‘COMA’ and ‘ESCAPE’. He stared at the wall thinking. “Escape a coma? So I’m not dead or dreaming?”
He heard footsteps behind him. He looked and saw another patient running at him. He didn’t have time to react as he was attacked. His vision went white again.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but I think we’re losing him.” Rebecca shook her head. “No. No that’s not possible.” She leaned over Jack’s body. “Honey please wake up.”
Jack sat up and realized the white walls were now grey walls with blood covering it. “I guess I am in a coma. Is that what I’m trying to escape?” he left the room and looked back. He noticed the door was gone. He continued onwards. He noticed something interesting. The words could spell something out. He entered another room that had an “O” on it.
Right as Jack opened the door, he saw a skull flying at him. He shot at it, hitting it. His vision went white.
“Ma’am, he’s regaining consciousness again.” “Thank you doctor.”
Jack got up and saw the same room. Nothing changed. He left the room and looked behind him. Just like the previous door, it disappeared. He walked to a room behind him that had an “M” on it. He entered it. It looked exactly like a normal hospital room. There was nothing in there but a note.
Jack walked closer to the note and read it. ‘ARE YOU READY TO FACE DEATH HEAD ON?’ “I guess so.” His vision went white.
“He’s sustaining a normal heartbeat, but he doesn’t seem to show any signs of getting out of the coma he’s in.”
Jack got up. But instead of being in the room he was in, he was back out in the hallway. “To a door with an A I guess.” He went deeper into the hallway and found the final door. He entered it and found a normal room like the last one. He was about  to speak when a voice spoke. “Death awaits. Are you willing to escape?” Jack opened his eyes to a sudden realization. “I’m in a coma. But I need to escape death.”
He felt as if something had appeared behind him. He turned around to find death itself. It was nothing but a skeleton with black piercing eyes and had a scythe in its right hand. Jack stared at in in disbelief. “Oh sweet Jesus.”
(Note: this upcoming part will be like a boss fight. Like I said, this is supposed to be like a short little game but in a story form.)
Jack saw Death lift his scythe up and hang it over his head. Jack made a quick decision to move out of the way before Death lowered his weapon. The scythe hit the ground making a metallic sound. The weapon scrapped along ground sending sparks in every direction.
Jack laid on the ground. He felt as if his body was paralyzed. He saw the scythe racing towards him. The weapon was about an inch away from him. He dodged at the last second as the scythe whirled passed his ears.
Jack looked behind Death and saw an open doorway. “It’s not that easy is it?” He suddenly remembered the first note he read. “The gun would protect me… Protect me from death.” He pulled the gun out and started to shoot at Death in the head. He heard the creature wail in pain as it dropped the scythe and held his forehead as if it was really injured.
The gun smoked and the slide was back. He pushed the magazine release as the clip fell out of the grip. It landed with a thud as he grabbed his second magazine. He shot Death in the head again. He had the same reaction. “Why isn’t he dying?”
Death got up and picked his scythe up and threw it at Jack. It spun in circles as it hurled towards Jack. He fell forwards and got on his hands and knees. The scythe went over his back andhit the wall behind him. Jack looked up at the menace that was trying to kill him. He took a look at the eye sockets on Death’s head.
Jack toughened up and aimed his pistol at the black eye sockets. He fired one shot at the right eye socket. He heard the bullet impact as Death dropped to the ground. He screamed in a demonic voice. He yelled as it started to bleed. Jack took this opportunity to aim at the other socket. He saw Death reach out as if he was reaching for something. He was confused at this. He then felt a sharp pain surging through his chest.
Jack looked down at his chest to find part of the scythe blade through his chest. He slowly looked back up at Death. Jack’s eyes twitched, his mouth open, he fell to his knees. He slowly closed his eyes.
“Nurse we need help STAT.” “What’s wrong?” “We lost him.” The nurse rubbed the defibrillators together. “Clear!”
Jack opened his eyes to find Death in the same spot as he was before. Jack slowly got to his knees. Death tilted his head slightly in disbelief. Jack stood up with his head tilted down. He stood there before lifting his head up. His heart, filled with rage. His muscles aching from pain. He grabbed the handle of the scythe and yanked it out of his back. His head shook from the pain going to his brain.
Death looked at him with his one eye socket. “It’s your time to go.” Jack looked at death with a stare of hatred. “You can take someone else.” Jack threw the scythe at Death. The tip of the blade hit Death in his left eye socket. Death’s head was thrown back. He screamed in pain as Jack backed up. Death exploded in a burst of white light. Jack looked away from the blinding light.
The room was quiet once more. Jack looked up and noticed a white circular light where Death was. He looked at it in confusion. “Well, I’ve got nothing to lose.” He started towards the light and walked through it.
Jack sat up and saw the nurses in the room. He looked around and found he was in the hospital he was admitted in. He saw the doctor get closer to him. “Oh my god.” “What?” Jack said looking around. “It’s been almost a year. We were about to pull the plug. It’s a miracle you woke up from that coma.” Jack thought about it for a moment, replaying everything he went through in his head. He then looked behind the doctor and saw Death standing there with his scythe in his right hand. The two exchanged stares. Death finally spoke. “I will always be watching.”

The End
(Explanation: If you understood what just happened, don’t bother reading this. If you still are a bit confused, here you go. The dead patients and other threats were little fragments of death. His gun protected him as he went through the hospital. He had to fight his way out to stay alive. But it was his time to die but he did his best to stay alive. He was in a purgatory state while in the coma. Death tried to take him but Jack kept himself alive.)
This is a short story that is in a video game like form. I took ideas from other video games and put that in here. I hope you enjoy it.
